Ask Dr? Jeffers

This month Dr. Jeffers is answering questions about the humanbrain and how it works.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,

One of my colleagues, Felix Moeller, told me that scientists arelearning to use computer to ‘read minds’. Is there any truth tothis story/

Jane Leon, New York, USA

Dear Ms. Leon,

Well, a lot of research is being conducted in this area, but sofar, the brain scanning equipment and corresponding computerprograms haven’t been able to actually read thoughts. In oneexperiment, test subjects(受试者)were connected to scanning equipmentand shown two numbers on a screen. They were then asked to choosebetween adding or subtracting(减)the two numbers. Using this method, researchers were able to follow brain processes and make thecorrect assumptions(假设)70 percent of the time. It’s not quite mindreading, but it’s certainly a first step.

—Dr. J.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,

My three-year-old son loves it when I dig my fingers into hissides and tickle (胳肢)him until he laughs uncontrollably. The otherday I noticed him trying to tickle himself but he couldn’t do it.Why not?

Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, Canada

Dear Mr. Lewis,

It’s because of how the brain works. The brain is trained toknow what to pay attention to and what to ignore. It causes us toignore physical feelings we expect to happen, but it causes a mildpanic reaction when there is an unexpected feeling. For example, you don’t notice how your shoulder feels while you’re walking downthe street. But if someone comes up behind you and touches youlightly on the shoulder, you may jump in fear. It’s that unexpectedpart that causes the tickle reaction.

Dr. J.

AGift giving proven to be valuable.

B.Memories from gift giving

C.Moments and events for gift giving

D.Various functions of gift giving

E.Gitt giving as a wasteful practice

F.Gift giving as a two-way social activity

Gift Giving

61. C

There are many occasions(场合) for giving gifts in modernindustrialinzed societies;birthdays, naming ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year, It is common to give gifts on many ofthese celebrations in western cultures. In addition, specialevents, such as one’ s first day of school or graduation fromuniversity, often require gift fiving.

62. F

What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we areexchanging gifts. If someone gives me a gift for my birthday, Iknow that I am usually expected to give one on his or her nextbirthday. A gift builds up or confirms a socialoblingation(义务).

63. D

Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means ofcommunication between loved ones. People say that a gift lets therecipient(接受者) know we are thinking of them, and that we want tomake the person “feel special.”We want people to feel wanted, tofeel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say“I’m sorry.”Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present thatsomeone will like. Sometimes we give things that we like or wouldfrrl comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sendingout messages-often very expressive ones.

64. B

People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A womanwhose mother had died years ago described the many gifts around herhouse. These were gifts that her mother had given her over theyears:“I appreciate these, and they mean something to me,”the womansaid,“because I remember the occasions they were given on, and thatthey were from my mother, and the relationship we’ve had.”The giftsremain and keep the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt thesame way about the gifts she gave to others. She hoped that therecipients would look at here gifts in years to come and

65. A

Emotions(情感)like these suggest that a positive spirit still liesbehind gift giving. They prove that the anthropologist ClaudeLevi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving ishighly wasteful. Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shownthat this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many aregiven. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is thevery reason for the tradition to continue.

Ever since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s,gentically mondified (GM, 转基因) foods have been increasinglydeveloped and marketed in many countries in the world, mainly onthe basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. Butcan GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would ,isit the best solution?

Despite what it promises,GM technology actually has not increased theproduction potential (潜力)of any crop. In fact, studies show thatthe most widely grown GM crop.

GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, areport than analysed nearly two decades of research on mojor GMfood crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantlyincrease US crop production.

Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seedsare expensive, GM companics tell farmers that they will make goodprofits by saving money on pesticides(杀虫剂). On the contrary, USgovernment data show that GM crops in the US have produced anoverall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. “The promise was that you could use less chemicalsand boost production. But neither is true,” said BillChristison, President of the US National Family Farm Coalition.

At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: TwelveMyths argue that there actually is more than enough food in theworld and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, butby problems in food distribution and politics. These indeed deserveour efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices resultsfrom the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report.

As a matter of fact ,scientists see better ways to feed theworld. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops havelittle to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which “green” farmingis supposed to be the first choice.

C. fair distribution of theircropsD. using more crops for fuel

60. Which of the following best describes the attitude of theauthor towards GM technology?

A.OptimisticB.DefensiveC. DisapprovingD. Casual

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从下框A~F选项中选出能概括每段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余项。

A. A sense of humour is not an inborn ability.

B. A sense of humour can be developed in our life.

C. A sense of humour helps us from several aspects.

D. A sense of humour means more than telling jokes.

E. A sense of humour can be expressed in many ways.

F. A sense of humour helps people to better enjoy life.

61.As awareness of the benefits of humour increases, most of uswant to get all the langhs we can. It seems that almost every daythere is another new discovery about the power of humour to help usphysically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every system ofthe body responds to langhter in some important or positive way.

62.Many pcople mistakenly believe that we are born with a senseof humour. They think that when it comes to a sense of humour.“either you have got it or you don't .” This is false! What istrue, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actuallysomething we are born with. For example, we laugh when we aretickled under the arm, even without thinking about how toreact.

63. The parts of the brain and central nervoussystem that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth inhuman infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense ofhumour. (After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don’trush over and say, “That kid has a great sense of humour!”) Yoursense of humour is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don’tbe nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself-then you willmake them laugh too.

64.Humour includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense ofhumour because they are not good joke tellers. More than jokes, asense of humour requires being willing and able to see the funnyside of life’s situations as they happen. In fact, one of the bestdefinitions(定义)of a sense of humour is “the ability to see thenonserious element in a situation.”

65.There may be a thousand different ways to express your senseof humour, but joke telling is only one of those ways. As more isdiscovered about how humour benefits our life, more people will beable to see and enjoy the humour when they are in a difficultsituation. Life depends on air, food and water, but it is madeeasier to live with a good sense of humour.

书面表达

One possible version:

Hi, TigerMom,

What puzzles you isactually a puzzle for many parents in China. My idea is that itis not quite right for you to do so.

Although high grades are animportant factor in evaluating students and for their futureuniversity admission, development in wisdom, emotion, health, andlife attitude should never be ignored. There are many examplesaround us. Some straight-A students in school have turned out notto be successful in society as they were expected. The reason isoften that the pressure from their parents allows them almost notime for other activities. Furthermore, punishment is by no means awise choice to help them grow up mentally and physically.

So I suggest that you takeyour friends’ advice. More importantly, let her live like a lovelygirl; let her have more friends and social activities; and let hermake mistakes of her own as we teenagers often do.

Three Boys and a Dad

Bras closed the door slowly as Sue left hometo visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, he wasthinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TVtalk show on his first day off in months. “This will be like a walkin the park,” he’d told his wife. “I’ll look after the kids, andyou can go visit your mom.”

Things started well, but just after eighto’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike, Randy, and Alex—camedown the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds, Randybegan using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum. Alexstarted to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍). Mike chanted“Where’s my toast, where’s my toast,” in the background. Bradrealized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.

Life became worse after breakfast. Mike woreRandy’s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in thebathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet hispants. Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking canraise your future risk of heart disease. But there is anotherfactor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the airyou breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露)to environmentalpollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analysesnow show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack orstroke(中风) within as little as a few hours after exposure. In onereview of the research, scientists found that people exposed tohigh levels of pollutants(污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer aheart attack within days of exposure than those with lowerexposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even airthat the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)considers to beof “moderate”(良好) quality and relatively safe for our health canraise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours ofexposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks arerelatively small for healthy people and certainly modestcompared with other risk factors such as smoking and high bloodpressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangersbecause everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless oflifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutantsmay not only improve environmental air quality but could alsobecome necessary to protect public health.

Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate tolook for jobs. Competiton is tough, so job seekers must carefullyconsider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, ourfamily and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.

A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companiesto discourage visible tattoos(纹身) nose rings,or certain dressstyles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet peopledo “cover” themseleves in order to convey(传递) certain mssages. Whatwe wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of whowe are. Just as people convey messages about themseleves with theirappearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the businessworld for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often aboutwhat customers accept.

Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, butfor busiesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Mostemployers do care about the personal appearances of theiremployees(雇员), because those people represent the companies totheir customers.

As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who wouldmake the best impression on our customers. There are plenty ofwell-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone whomight disappoint my customers. Even thongh I am open-minded,I can’texpect all our customers are.

There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choicesdoes not match that of your preferred employer. No company shouldhave to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she isunwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards arelegal.

57. Which of the following is the newspaper editor’s opinionaccording to Paragraph2?

A. People’s appearances carry message about themselves.

B. Customers’ choices influence dress standards incompanies.

C. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairlytreated.

D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in theworkplace.

58. What can be inferred from thetext?

A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for aninterview.

B. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice forcompanies.

C. Companies sometimes have to change to respect theircandidates.

D. Hiring managers make the best impression on theircandidates.

59. Which of the following would be the best title for thetext?

A. EmployeesMatterB. Personal Choices Matter

C. AppearancesMatterD. Hiring Managers Matter

60. The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in theworkplace may best be

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余项。

A. Be well-organised.

B. Close with a Q & A.

C. Don’t be contradictory.

D. Bring it to a specific end.

E. Speak slowly and pause.

F. Drop unnecessary words.

Speaking to a group can be difficult, butlistening to a bad speech is truly a tiresome task—especially whenthe speaker is confusing. Don’t want to confuse your audience?Follow these suggestions:

61.

When it comes to understanding newinformation, the human brain needs a little time. First, we hearthe words; then, we compare the new information to what we alreadyknow. If the two are different, we need to pause and think. But abreathless speaker never stops to let us think about what he or sheis saying and risks confusing us. Slow it down. And breathe.

62.

Sometimes we all start a sentence one way andthen switch directions, which is very difficult to follow. When youconfuse your listeners with opposing information, you leave theaudience wondering what part of the information is right and whatpart they should remember. Instead of relying on keeping correctingyourself, work to get the facts clear and straight.

63.

Jumping from point to point as it comes toyour mind puts the onus(责任)on your listeners to make up for yourlack of organisation. And it’s confusing for them to listen, reorganize, and figure out what you’re saying all at once. Butgoing smoothly from one point to the next helps them understandinformation more easily. You can arrange things from beginning toend, small to large, top to bottom or by some other order. Just besure to organize.

64.

Repeated use of um, ah, like, you know and some otheruseless noises can drive an audience crazy. It makes the speakersound uncertain and unprepared, and it can leave listeners soannoyed that they can’t pay attention. Recently I attended a speechthat was marked by so many ums that audience members wererolling their eyes. Was anybody grasping the intended message? Um,probably not.

65.

Many speakers finish up their speeches with question-and-answer(Q&A) sessions, but some let the Q& A go on without a clear end. The audience isoften left confused about whether the meeting is over and when theycan get up and leave. Do your listeners a favour by setting a timelimit on questions, and close your speech with a specificsignal—even if it’s something simple like, “Ifyou have any more questions, you know where to reach me.”

Or even more to the point, conclude your speech with “Thanks foryour time.”
